Splitting Sync Problems

When I split a video file the audio no longer matches the video. For example
the audio is now ahead of the video on the newly split item. I am not sure
how to resolve this issue.

What sort of file is it?
dv.avi or wmv shouldn't have this problem, but mpegs and other compressed
avi's do. Convert these to wmv then try again.

The files were .mpeg. The interesting part was that when the files were
split in the preview section they played fine but not when they were added to
the timeline. I have done as advised as well as spilt the .mpeg files
outside of Windows Movie and then inserted them.
