Splitting Database

DW

Two main questions with one sub question in the second question.

First, I split a database, and if I try to open the front end while a user
is using a connected Data Access Page, it does not let me in. If I log in
during a time that no one is using the Data Access Page, I can get in and
after I'm in they can get in too, and the users of the Data Access Page can
have simultaneous use with me. What can I do so that I can get in the front
end at any time regardless of what activity is taking place with the Data
Access Page?

Second, how do I distibute copies of the front end? Do I simply copy the
front end file and give it to other front end users? If so, do the copies
automatically retain the UNC path to the back end if the new recepients of
the front end paste their front end any where they wish?

I can't help you with the Data Access Page question.

Distribute copies of the front end:
Yes, you can copy the front end file and give that to the users. If the links
are set up using UNC paths then as long as the users have the correct rights
there should be no problem. The path is stored as in the connect property of
the linked table.

You might want to take a look at Tony Toews site for distributing updates to
your front end.

Tony Toews' Auto FE Updater

This utility will automatically update the Microsoft Access front end (FE)
MDB/MDE/ADE/ADP and associated files from a server to client workstation(s) or
other network locations.

This utility is designed to automatically update the front end and
associated files from the server to the client workstation or
directory on the server. The utility will, if required, create the
directory on the workstation, copy files to workstation, create a
shortcut on the desktop and update registry keys. It will then start
the Access MDE/MDB. If none of this is required the next time you run
this utility then all those steps are bypassed and it just starts the
Access MDE/MDB.

Note that this utility is now on it's own website. And it will be
*much* easier to use in a week or two. A wizard is available as a hot
fix right now while folks test it out for me. But that's not all.

Tony,

I read some of the information on the file. It seems like an excellent tool.
The home page states that it's free but the liscensing page states that $100
liscensing fee is required. Please explain.

Thanks

That's a voluntary license. Pay it if you want to.

BTW huge changes coming in the next week or so. It will be much, much
easier to use.
