splitting cat5e pairs

Hi all,
This is the only place I could find to try and post this question. Hope it
is the right place.
Anyway, I have cat5e network setup. I discovered that our telephone vendor
has come in and split some of my cat5 drops and is using a pair from the cat5
cable to connect a phone line. (I happen to be looking in the attic and
found some cables that were wired together. )
Can anyone tell me what problems I could be looking at down the road with
these drops? Does the splitting cause less bandwidth for the computer
attached?
My nic cards are 10/100. Does 100 require all pairs of cat5?
I have not taken one apart to see what pairs they wired to.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Hi

Regular Network connection uses only two pairs. Howvever using the other
pair for Tel. line is a Bad idea. The telephone line carries higher voltage
signal that introduces lot of noise when the telephone is ringing, High
Voltage and noise with Network traffic is a big Network No No.

Howvever make sure that indeed he used the working Network cable. Many
installations of new houses use separate Cat5e for telephone too.

Jack (MVP-Networking).
