You can split the phone line to go to multiple computers for dialup.
A router is used for ethernet, not phone lines. You can get a router
with 4 ports, and hook that up to your cable or dsl modem, and then
plug your computers into the router.

DSL uses all 4 wires. As telco original design, the 4 wires were designed
for one active phone line (2 wires), the other 2 can be used as backup if
either of those 2 internal lines fail, OR, another phone line service with a
different phone number.
