split map

Word hides the split bar when the document map is enabled. This is a problem,
because there is no way to figure out from the documentation or from hints in
th UI that you can get the split bar back a gain by disabling the document
map. At minimum, the split bat should never be hidden - an attempt to use it
should bring up a dalog saying that the document map will be disable if you
proceed.

Even better, each sub-window in a split should contain its own document map.
FInally the document map should be controlled by a toggle button beside the
view selector at the bottom left.

There is a button for the Document Map on the Standard toolbar, but since I
don't use DM except when testing to answer users' questions, I always have a
hard time finding it. I agree it would be handy to have it beside the other
view buttons, but this might be confusing because all the other buttons are
mutually exclusive (you use them to select one view or another).

One thing I find disconcerting is losing the horizontal scroll bar (and with
it the view buttons). When Web Layout view was first introduced, there was
no horizontal scroll bar in that view (since text wraps to the window,
apparently it didn't occur to anyone that it would be needed, but it made it
impossible [or at least so I thought] to get out of Web Layout view except
by using the View menu); that was corrected in the next version. The
situation is the same now with Reading Layout view, but I have just
discovered that you can get out of Reading Layout view (as you can out of
Full Screen view and Print Preview) using ESC, and I'm wondering if that was
also true of Web Layout view.
