Lee, I can't duplicate that behavior in my copy of Word 2003. If there is a
misspelled or unrecognized word in a comment text, it shows the wavy red
underline, right-clicking it may display suggested corrections, and both the
spell check button on the toolbar and the F7 shortcut work.

Maybe there is some other setting that's interfering. Is any kind of protection
applied to the document (forms, formatting, etc.)? Does the spell check work
everywhere else in the same document?

Hello! Freedman

Thanks for the prompt reply.

The spell check works in the main document (wavy red line), but not in the
Comment Text.

There is no protection or whatsoever applied in the doc. I use the NORMAL
template.

Maybe the Style for comment balloons (IIRC it's called Balloon Text,
and you get at it through the "Show All Styles" choice in the options
at the bottom of the Styles & Formatting panel) is set to "Do Not
Check Spelling and Grammar."

I considered that, but even deliberately changing the style ("Comment Text"
rather than "Balloon Text") to "Do not check" doesn't disable the button or the
F7 shortcut; it just results in the "text has been skipped" message.

No. The box "Do Not Check Spelling and Grammar" is UNCHECKED.

Since we've eliminated the obvious, I suspect you're dealing with some kind of
damage to the document or to Word.

If this is happening only in the current document, try copying everything
*except* the final paragraph mark to a new blank document.

If it happens in any document you try, then follow the steps in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm#Word_crashes_as_soon_as_it_opens_
Ignore the "crashes" part; the steps are useful for general troubleshooting.

I am trying to do something mentioned in the given link in your last mail. I
am stuck with the followings:

(a) In my RUN/OPEN box, I don't have regedt32.exe, and only regedt.exe. (My
OS is WinXP Pro).

(b) Even when I tried regedt.exe, then
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling,
I don't have Proofing Tools\Spelling in the Shared Tools folder.

Perhaps you would like to comment on this. Thanks.

The MRU list in the Run dialog shows commands that you have used, not all
that are available. If you have regedt.exe, it must be a typo, as the
command is regedit.

Hello! Freeman:

Upon further research on the topic, I made the following findings:

1. If I leave the Balloon on, then I can check the spelling by highlighting
the comment text in the Balloon.

2. However, if I switch the Balloon to "NEVER", then I CANNOT check the
spelling from the Reviewing Pane (which is a preferred area to check
spelling). Why?

Any comments on these? Thanks.

No, I have no comment, because the behavior you're seeing is clearly not
standard behavior for Word.

Did you try _any_ of the troubleshooting steps I mentioned before?

L

LeeCC

Yes. As I mentioned in my previous mail, I tried regedt.exe, then
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling,

But I don't see Proofing Tools\Spelling in the Shared Tools folder.

Another strange behaviour of my Office 2003 ???

You did mention that registry key -- but the article I pointed to _does not_
mention that key. I have no idea where you found instructions to look at it, but
it doesn't exist on my computer and I don't believe it's necessary.

Now go read the article
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm#error_message_as_soon_as_Word_opens
that I mentioned before, and do what it says, instead of poking around at
random.
