Spellcheck Not Functioning

Spellcheck will not function in any Word Doc. (Word 2002, running XP)

Example of problem:
I open a blank doc. type in "Tebt" (which could be "test" or "debt", etc.)
Hit F7
Word will bring up the dialog box but the "Suggestion" area, where the
correct word choices are will be inaccessible. Basically, there will be no
way to select "test" or "debt", etc.

I've ran the following troubleshooting steps:
1. Delete the Word Data Reg. Key
2. Delete Word Options Reg. Key
3. Rename Normal.dot
4. Turn off Starter folder add ins
5. Delete the COM add ins reg. key

6. Reinstalled word (several times)
7. Updated MS Office with Service Pack 3 and other recommended security
updates.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

This might be a really dumb suggestion, but open a new document and check
Tools | Language | Set Language, and see whether "Do Not Check" is selected
as the default.

It's a good suggestion. Actually, it's the first thing I tried. But I reset
the language options, and it's still no use.

Thanks, tho.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?RnJhbmtH?=,

That's a weird one. But you do see the suggestions?

If you hold CTRL to start Word in Safe Mode, does spell check work?

How about if you right-click a spelling error (red squiggled word in the doc)?
Are there suggestions and can you use them?

Hi,

Yes. I do see the suggestions, but there's no way to navigate among them, or
even to select them.

The problem appears in safe mode as well.

When you type in a word (like "tebt") it will not be underlined in red, even
though the "check spelling as you type" option is selected.

However, after running a spellcheck and closing out of the spell check
dialog box, the word WILL be underlined in red and you can right click and
correct it.

OK, I think I follow what you're seeing, although I've never seen it, nor ever seen
anyone else mention it that I can remember...

In a general sort of way, if a problem crops up with dialog boxes (and safe mode
doesn't help), then a damaged DATA key may be the culprit. You could try deleting
that so that Word generates one with the installation defaults. See the steps in

Hi...and thanks for trying to sort through this problem.

I delted the data key and the problem's still there. I even tried
downloading the beta version of office and the probelm appears in the same
exact way with Word 2007.

I also downloaded Open Office and the spell check works just fine there. So
I think it is some problem with the registry.

Well, that wouldn't help track down this problem. There is no relationship
whatsoever between OpenOffice and the Microsoft product :-)

At this point, I'd have tried Help/Detect and Repair from within Word.
However, if you've installed Office 2007 (Beta!) on top of your Office 2003,
that may have complicated issues...

My advice would be to: remove Office 2007, then remove Office 2003. The
install the version you intend to work with (but if this is your only or your
production machine you should NOT install beta software).

I ran the help/detect repair within the original version of Word 2002 and
within the 2007 beta...neither repair program detects any problem.

You make good points about the beta version, so I'll uninstall that and try
to reinstall Word 2002 (again), but I'm quite sure the problem will still be
there.
