spellcheck in protected templates

Hi,
We have a lot of custom templates created in Word 2002. When you try to run spellcheck on the filled in templates it does not work. If you unprotect the document it will spell check parts but not all of the document. We need to keep these forms as protected as possible to stop the end users from messing them up. Any ideas on how to accomplish this??
