spellcheck in outlookexpress

Bought a new e-machines computer,it has a spellcheck in the office programs,
and also webmail.They are funtional. In outlook express,the spellcheck icon
is grayed out and cannot figure how to make it work. Is there any way to
get to the the spellcheck turned on, or are the any downloads to download
from microsoft???? Or if we have to buy something, what do we buy ???????
