Spell checker only lets me check in French, not English

I have spent many hours trying to get my MS Mail spell checker to check in
English. I have gone through the E-mail, spell checker and the only
languages it will let me use are French (Canadian) and French (French). I am
using MS Works and will not be using MS Office. Strangely, the program does
check my spelling in French..
HELP!
Thanks,

Well, what language/region is your OS set to in the first place?
Start/Control Panel/Clock, language/region. Obviously something is French
origin or is set to French.

Googleing helps...

You need to install the Proofing Tools from a previous version of Office.
You'll be cured if you follow these instructions:
1.. Run Setup from another Office installation disk.
2.. Select "Custom Install".
3.. You'll have to insert your Product Key.
4.. Turn Off ALL of the product installations. (Right-Click icon and
select "Not Available")
5.. Under "Office Shared Features", set "Proofing Tools" to "Run all from
My Computer" This should install the English, French, and Spanish
dictionaries. English alone would probably solve the problem, but what the
heck?

Don't have a previous version of Office. I did break down and buy Word 2007,
but it still only gives me the choice of French and French.
