Spell Check Not Working

Hi,

My Windows Mail spell check has not been working for a few days. I thought
that something was wrong and it would be fixed my MS but so far it's not.

This is what's happening: After I write an email and click on "ABC", I get
a message that says "An eror occurred while spelling was being checked".
When I click on "Send", I get a message that says "The spell check on this
document was halted".

I checked in the Discussion Group if anyone else was having this problem and
found a discussion from last year that said to go to Tools, Options, Spelling
Tab, Choose another language other than the one you are using, and click
Apply. Then Choose "English" or what ever language you are using, click
Apply, then OK.

But I'm still getting the same message that I was receiving before. Can
anyone help me?

Thanks

Hi Gary,

What is the difference between WM & WLM? I remember reading somewhere is
the community postings a few months ago that WLM was not very good. People
were having problems with it and wanted to revert back to WM.

Anyway, my spellcheck worked fine until a few days ago when I began to get
those messages that I wrote about. Do you know what suddenly happened to
stop spellcheck from working?

Thanks,

WM is a "released to manufacturing" component of Microsoft Vista. It has
fewer bugs, in my experience. Otoh, no one is doing development work on WM,
and they haven't for two years. This is bad.

WLM can connect directly to Hotmail accounts. You can install third party
spell checkers for WLM, and you can add foreign languages from localized
versions of Office (this is a pain in the neck, but you can do it). I
imported my messages from Outlook Express into WLM, and then exported them
to Outlook. At the end of the process, all the email addresses of my
correspondents were gone. "Friendly Names" were still there. Afaik, WM
does not have serious data corruption bugs like this, but people in these
groups can't even find the spell check files for WM, let alone know how to
fix them.

I would estimate that better than 90% of the people who switched from WM
to WLM were happier with it. The best way to discover the differences is to
try it out. If it turns out you don't like it, merely uninstall, and WM is back just
like before. A newer version of WLM is just finishing its beta testing, and it
should be released soon. The older released version (November 2007) is
also still available: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Hi Gary,

How do I know what kind of search engine I now have. When I began to
install WLM, it asked if I wanted to make Live Search my default search
engine in IE. And I don't know if I should do that.

Thanks,

G

Gary VanderMolen

That's optional, just decline it. Most people have a preferred search engine,
either Yahoo or Google or Live Search. You can change your preferred search
engine at any time. In Internet Explorer, look on the far right of the bar that has
the URL address.

Hi Gary,

I instlled WLM but I don't know how to import my email messages from WM.
All my folders came over to WLM that were in my WM but nothing is in them.

I really like WM and would like to keep it for now. Do you know why the
problem suddenly happened with my spell check not working in WM. Is there a
fix for it. I would really like to continue with WM but want my spell check
to work.

Thanks,

G

Gary VanderMolen

Sorry to hear WLM did not import your WM emails. That's very unusual.
You can try a manual import if you want (File, Import, Messages).

Something is interfering with spell check in your WM. It could be your
antivirus. Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not fully
compatible with Windows Mail.

I'm using Norton's 360, Version 2 and have been for awhile. I have had no
problems with spell check until a few days ago. Someone from Dell downloaded
"Super Anti Spyware" for me on 5/31/08. They were trying to fix something
on my computer and the tech said that this is a very good spyware and it's
free so she just downloaded it for me. I also know that WM has some form of
protection. Norton's also told me once that they are not compatable with WM.

But as I said before, everything worked fine until a few days ago and
nothing was added or changed on my computer to make this happen.

Thanks,

Nadia

Norton Antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Symptoms often don't surface until several months have gone by, or until
an update occurs.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

In a worst case scenario, you may have to uninstall Norton, followed by
using their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Several users here have reported that when they complained to Symantec,
they received a free upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2009.

Hi Gary,

First of all "Thank You" very much for spending so much time trying to solve
my spell check problem. Let me tell you what happened. I contacted Norton's
and shared my computer for 2 hours while the tech tried to see if Norton's
was the problem. He first disabled the e mail scanning and I tried the spell
check and it still didn't work. Then he uninstalled Norton's 360 Version2
completely and I tried spell check again. It still didn't work. The Norton
Tech told me that it was not a Norton issue. So he reinstalled Norton's
360-Version 2. He told me to check with MS or my ISP. I think I mentioned
in one of my replies to you that a Dell tech a long time ago put this Free
Syperware Anti Virus on my computer. Do you think I should uninstall that?
Also, I uninstalled WLM but only that one program. There are still 5 other
programs, I think that I may have to uninstall before I install WLM again and
see what happens. The 5 are: 1. Windows Live Favorites for Windows Live
Toolbar 2. Windows Live Installer, 3 Windows Live Sign In Assistant, 4
Windows Live Toolbar, 5 Windows Live Writer. Can I uninstall these and then
try to install WLM again. Or should I call Verizon my ISP? Gary, Do you
work for MS? If not, I would have to pay a hefty fee to call me and utilize
their phone services.

Please advise on all these questions. Thanks and I'm very very sorry to be
such a pest and a dummy on computers.

Thanks again.

Hi Gary,

Well you SHOULD be a PAID employee of MS. You are excellent in what you do.

OK--I clicked on the link you gave me to uninstall/reinstall and it was over
my head, There were too many questions I had and didn't understand it well
enough and was afraid to try it. So I went to Goggle and typed in Uninstall
Windows Live Mail and it gave me step by step instructions and it's what I
did to uninstall just WLM. But it said to do the same for all the other
programs that you want to uninstall. There were 5 programs that I wrote you
in my last correspondence with you as to whether I should uninstall those.
Should I????

As I understand it (and I'm terrible at computers), if you want to uninstall
a program, you just have to go to "Control Panel"--"Programs & Features" and
click on the program you want to uninstall or change or whatever. That's
what I did to uninstall WLM. That's all you have to do right. You don't
have to do anything else to finish the procedure, right?

Once I know what other programs to uninstall, I will use the same link to
install it like I did the first time and they even have a link in the
uninstall instructions or install WLM. How do I get the WLM box on my
desktop to just click when I want to get into it?

Thanks for your help. You are really helpful.

But, one more question, if I don't like WLM and want WM back where else
should I turn for help on the spell check feature? Should I try Verizon my
ISP????

Thanks again,

G

Things are never quite as simple as they first appear to be.
Yes, you can do a basic uninstall (as you indicated) via Control Panel,
Programs & Features. Some programs, and Windows Live Mail is one
of those, will leave data structures and registry keys in place although
the basic program files are uninstalled. Most times that is of no concern,
but if the data structures and/or registry keys were corrupted, and you
wanted to do a clean reinstall of Windows Live Mail, you would need to
do the more elaborate 'complete uninstall/reinstall' which I referenced.

Whether you should uninstall the other 5 programs is up to you. If you
have no need for them, by all means, uninstall them.

Verizon won't help you with your Windows Mail spell check problem.
If you insist on getting your Windows Mail repaired, you would probably
need to reinstall Vista.

Hi Gary,

I'm going to try to uninstall/reinstall as you stated in one of your
previous messages. I might also call Dell--they loaded Vista Home Premium on
my computer and they just might be able to help me. Probably not but I'll
give it a try to see if I could also get the spell check working again in WM.

Thanks for all your help. I'll let you the final results.

Thanks Again,

Hi Gary,

Well, I exhausted all my options for seeing why my WM spellcheck will not
work so I contacted Dell yesterday 12/10. Tech shared my computer and
couldn't figure out why spell check wouldn't work. I showed her the link for
"REGEDIT" and she had to consult with her manager and then said they would
research it and call me back today. The manager did and shared my computer.

This is what happened: He tried to delete WLM using REGEDIT and then
installing WLM. He got it installed as I did, the folders came over but
nothing is in them--just like when I did it. Then something came up that
said "Have you signed in yet with WLM?" I didn't think I did because I never
saw that page before. So I signed in (tech is still sharing my computer and
watching what I'm doing). It wouldn't let me use my current email address,
it has to end with live.com, so I did that. Suddenly when we clicked on WLM,
I saw a WLM Hotmail email page. I did not want hotmail and the tech didn't
know why that happened and didn't know how to undo it. So, here I am with:
WM, WLM--with nothing in my folders-- and a WLM Hotmail Account !!!!!

If you think I was mixed up before, you should be here now. I feel like
throwing my computer out the window right now!!!

Is there a way that "you" can share my computer with me? I know the kind of
knowledge and expertise you have.

Thank You,

G

Gary VanderMolen

Not sure what could have happened. Signing in to WLM with a Live.com
account ("Live ID") should not have transferred you to a Hotmail page.
It should have kept you within WLM itself.

You can try doing a manual import into WLM. In WLM go to File,
Import, Messages. If you don't see File on the Menu bar, press the Alt key.

Sorry, I don't do any personal or one-on-one computer support.

Hi Gary,

It's strange, I didn't get an email notifying me that I had a reply in MS
Communities. I just happened to look now to see if I had any and I did from
you.

Well, Just as the Dell Tech did, I did the manual import. Some of the
messages came and some didn't. 21 Came and 10 didn't including my "Inbox" &
Microsoft Communities (I save all the responses I get so if I have another
problem like I had before, I could just check in that folder).

You know--there has to be a reason why my spellcheck stopped working in WM.
It just didn't stop for no reason. Why can't anyone find an answer for me.
It has to be a MS problem--probably with Vista. And now I can't even get WLM
to work as it should. What seems to be the problem. I can't call MS--they
will charge me an hourly rate and Gary, I lost my job 7 years ago and am on
disability and just barely getting by month to month. I saved enough
(birthday, Xmas, etc. money) to get a new computer to help me through my
illness. Otherwise, I would not even have a computer. But a computer does
help me survive but not like this when I'm having so many problems.

I don't know what to do next !!!!!!!!

Thanks,
