Speed Up System Restore

I have a problem with the Windows Update feature where the
critical and recommended updates will not install (no
error messages, they just will not even download). So, I
have been working with the system restore, using a process
of trial and error trying to figure out when my problem
began. However, the System Restore was pretty quick at
first (30-45 minutes), but now it is taking HOURS to
complete. Is there anyway I can speed this process up?

Thanks in advance,

The viruses and spyware on your computer are having a detrimental effect on
XP.
