I have followed the instructions in Computer Active magazine for using Speech
recognition but when I open 'tools' and click 'speech' nothing happens.
Can anyone help?
 
It sounds as if you don't have Speech Recognition installed. Word's Help
says:

To use speech recognition for the first time, install it by clicking Speech
on the Tools menu in Microsoft Word, or by doing a custom installation.
After speech recognition is installed, it is available on the Tools menu in
any speech-enabled Office program.

You might also read the "Troubleshoot speech recognition" Help topic.

Finally, what version of Word do you have? Is it one that includes Speech
Recognition?
