Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

You don't need to download anything - speech recognition capability is built
in to Windows XP.

Use Control Panel > then doubleclick Speech (icon) to train your
voice/vocabulary/microphone etc. It gives you some exercises to read out
aloud to allow the computer to be trained to your voice.

Then, in your applications that can use Speech Recognition eg MS Office
(such as Outlook, Word etc) you need to enable it from the Tools menu >
Speech in those applications.

This will put a tool bar with several options for example for "dictation" -
for "writing" the sentences you're dictating to the computer, and "voice
commands" so you can use the application's menus (as you would with a mouse,
but using the speech recog instead of the mouse) via voice recog - for
example saying "File....Open.....[filename].....OK" will open the file you
tell will activate the "File Menu", the "Open" dialogue, and select the file
you say; then say "OK" to "click" the OK button and it will then open the
file in that application.

It could be very handy for someone unable to use a traditional keyboard, but
its hard work getting it to recognise your voice patterns and vocab, and
pronunciations (there was a YouTube video recently of some guy trying to
write a Perl program using speech recognition (demonstrating the feature in
Vista, I think) and was getting nowhere.

is the link, if you want a laugh
at his attempts.

The above procedure is for Windows XP Professional, but it should be the
same for XP Home. If the tools aren't installed, they may need to be
installed from the Windows disk, and/or from the applications install disks
(eg MS Office).

Hope this is of some assistance.

I don't think speech recognition is built into my computer or if it is i have
no idea how to find and install it. I have tried to go into microsoft word
and look under tools so that I can enable it but when I look under tools the
speech tab isn't there.

Speech Recognition was first introduced to Office with the 2002(XP) version.

If you have 2002 or newer installed it should be under Tools>Speech

If not, right-click on a toolbar and "customize"

Either select Toolbars>Menubar>Reset or Commands>Tools and drag the Speech to
your Tools Menu on Menubar above.

If still no joy, try this site for a download.
