speech/microphone

I'm trying to use the Speech tool in WORD.

I just bought a microphone with headset. I plugged it in (in the correct
spot).

But nothing happens. When I run Speech it asks me to talk into the
microphone and a dial is supposed to be moving to show the sound change.
Nothing seems to happen.

Any ideas? Perhaps I need to do something to install this microphone?
I have XP.

Let's put it this way:

The on/off microphone switch is very small and nondescript.
