Specific picture resizing question

I'm wondering if amongst the many picture processing freeware out there
there's one that allows one to resize different sized pictures to one
standard size? This is what I mean: I take pictures of differing
Megapixel sizes, with obviously different lengths and breadths (or long
sides and short sides.) I would like to resize them to the same common
dimensions so I can display them on a website. However, because of the
differing sizes a resize by percentage will still leave me with pictures
of differeing dimensions, and resizing by a specific pixel length won't
work if the pictures are a mix of portrait and landscape.

What I would like to be able to do is resize pictures so the long side (or
the short side) of each picture is sized to the same nominated length,
whether it's portrait or landscape. For example I have pictures of
800x600, 600x800, 1024x768, 768x1024, 1280x720 and 720x1280, but I want to
resize the pictures so that the long side of each picture is 640 (ie.,
640=800, 1024, 1280).

Any ideas?

Irfanview does this with ease.
http://www.irfanview.com/

file>batch conversion/rename, check the advanced options, there you can set
a length or width for all pictures

Irfanview: File-->Batch Conversion/Rename-->Advanced Options. One
may specify absolute dimensions in pixels, cm, inches. It's freeware. To
avoid distortion, insure the program is set to resample instead of to
"resize".

You know, I hadn't updated my copy of Irfanview for awhile, so I decided
to do so, because I hadn't seen that function- and whaddya know! It does
exactly what I want it to do. Thanks for the heads up.
