Speakers Question

This is a little off-topic, but is there a set of speakers made by Creative
that equal or better sound to the Logitech Z-560's and a similar price? It
doesn't matter if the speakers are 2.1 or what as long as the sound is equal
to or greater than the Z-560's. I'd keep the Z-560's, but the SoundTouch
Control Center was built very cheap, and the volume knob is causing the
speakers to have feedback. I like the build of Creative speakers better...

I'm sorry you're disappointed with the Z560s. I have a set of Z680s and I
think they're fantastic - far better quality-wise than anything Creative
have produced. The digital output from my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro is
superb. The 560s are (IIRC) identical to the 680s (they look pretty much the
same - they're not available in the UK) but they do not have a centre
channel. It was the best £250 I've ever spent - well worth every penny.

I would suggest that the feedback is caused by incorrect setup rather than
the volume knob.

Mute your microphone.

Microphone is muted and they do it even when the computer's off. They are
set up properly. Volume knob is loose on the SoundTouch Control Center.
You have to glue the control center back together - there are no screws.
After you leave the speakers on for an extended time, the volume knob will
be okay and cause no feedback, but it must be on for quite a while, and when
you first turn them on, they make static and popping sounds for a few
minutes before they quit. I heard the Z-680s were fine, except they had a
hissing sound, and I don't know if I want to spend all that extra money for
the one speaker that I don't need because my room isn't really designed for
4.1 to begin with. I had two speakers on the lower section of my desk, and
2 speakers on the top of my desk. The sub was on the floor, and the
SoundTouch Control Center was to the left of my monitor standing on its
base.

I have a spare Creative set that's hooked up to my computer right now and
they're causing me no problems.

Ok, well that's not feedback. Feedback is when the sound from the
speakers feeds back into the source, i.e. a microphone, and is steady
tone; a squeal, moan or rumble. What you describe sounds like a
defective amplifier circuit in the speakers or possibly the power supply
for the speakers.

You've narrowed it down, sounds like your other speakers need replacing
then.

Happy New Year Travis!

Happy new year to you too. I've read up reviews at macworld and a few
people complained about these speakers having the problem I have. They too
state that the problem is coming from the volume knob on the SoundTouch
Control Center. Most of the people that complained about them were people
that blew the sub, but they were usually too rough on the sub right out of
the box, and you can't do that with a new speaker system. You have to break
them in first. (Others that did have them broken in tried to max the volume
out, which I think that's nuts because half is way too loud for me.)

I can tell you categorically that they do *NOT* hiss - and, if they do, it's
more than likely caused by incorrect setup.

This has nothing to do with XP. You're right, it's off topic, and not
just a little.

Take this post elsewhere.

Yeah, and tell me where to take it... (And no, not up there either.) Hee

How come everywhere I read, people are complaining about the Z-680s in
particular make a hiss noise? Logitech's newer speaker system that will
replace the Z-680's (Z-5500) has been told it no longer has the hiss issue.
I've read that there were quite a few people that had the same SoundTouch
Control Center issue that I had, but I think the number one problem was the
sub blowing out. (Though I personally think that most of the time they
deserve it) You don't max out the volume when you get a new speaker system
and you shouldn't max it out after they're broken in either. Now I'm not
saying that I'm anti-Logitech, but I don't think I'm impressed with the
common problems with their speakers. Now if I can find a set of their
speakers that have no common problems, maybe again, but knowing that the
Z-560 is no longer being made, and knowing they have 2 or 3 frequent
problems (or at least it's sure harder than heck to find them) I would have
to get the Z-5500, which would have been $140 more than I paid for my
Z-560s. No, 5.1 isn't worth that much because I don't have the set up for
it in the first place. I would get the Z-5300e, but they don't have as much
bass as my Z-560s and I just couldn't get enough of the bass from them. As
I said a couple sentences ago, I'm not anti-Logitech, I just don't prefer
their speakers after this event. In case you're curious, I only use
Logitech mice with computers that I use. (Mine's the MX-510.) I also use a
Logitech keyboard most of the time. (Mine's the Elite)

OK, so what was I supposed to do? Send the post to nowhere and just let the
problems hang over my head for an eternity when there was no newsgroups that
were designed for this? I chose this NG because a lot of people are on this
NG. There was one Creative newsgroup, but guess what? Nobody there, just
advertisements last I checked.

Try alt.music.4-track

Although the name implies 4-track recording it has evolved into
multi-track recording and audio with a lot of computer related audio
subjects discussed.

Also try other alt.music or alt.audio groups but stay away from any with
"pro" in the names, you'll get flamed to hell and back.
