spdif out with SoundMax AD1888

Hey folks,

I have an ASUS P4R800-VM motherboard with onboard SoundMax AD1888 sound
controller, running Windows XP Pro SP1. No matter what I do, I cannot get
the spdif connection to work in WMP9. It works with Cyberlink's PowerDVD5,
but whenever I select spdif in PowerDVD's audio codec within WMP9, the
channels immediately revert to 2 channel stereo. I have tried WinDVD and
nvDVD and get the same behavior, so this can't just be a codec issue.
Strangely, GraphEdit exhibits the same behavior, so I am convinced there is
a DirectSound issue with the SoundMax drivers. Anyone know how to go about
troubleshooting this?

Peter,

Thanks, but why would a cable from the DVD-ROM to the motherboard have
anything to do with this? My DVD-ROM is configured for digital audio anyway
through the IDE cable....a cable to the motherboard would only be for analog
connections. I have never heard of a DVD-ROM to motherboard digital
connection/cable. I have no problems with PowerDVD's capability of passing
AC3 out the s/pdif with my current config, just WMP9's ability to do the
same thing. So, I don't know if this is a software or hardware issue
because, as I understand it, WMP9 uses DirectShow, which probably needs
specific hardware or driver requirements.

Hi,

Check the hardware connection.
Open the chassis, check the sound cable from DVD-rom to the digital-in socket.
Make sure the sound cable connectors are connected to the DVD-digital out
socket and the other end is connected to the digital-in socket. Refer this
to the mobo user manual.
