ASUS P4P800-VM mobo with SPDIF module / XP volume control problems.

Hello,

My computer has a ASUS P4P800-VM mobo with SoundMAX audio (AC97).
Recently, I bought the SPDIF module for digital audio output and hooked
my Logitech Z-5500 5.1 speakers to my computer using the optical wire
connection.

SoundMAX and XP are both configured to 5.1 without any problems.

Before I bought the module, I connected my speakers through a 6 channel
setup. With this connection, I was able to control Front, Surround,
Centre, Lfe, and BassBoost through the XP volume control (double click
the speaker icon near the clock).

Once I changed my connection to the optical output, everything still
works properly, EXCEPT that I am unable to control Front, Surround,
Centre, Lfe, and BassBoost through the XP volume control. Only under
the "Wave" option can I control the volume level sent to my speakers.
This ONLY changes the overall volume, not each of the 5.1 audio
aspects.

Strangely too, along with Front, Surround, etc. the main "Volume
Control" option does not work anymore either...

Does anybody know how this can be fixed so that I can control the
Front, Surround, Centre, Lfe, and BassBoost through the XP volume
control while using an optical connection through the SPDIF module?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Brian

This is probably the better setup.

You do realize that with an optical connection you can only get true 5.1
when playing back Dolby Digital content, right? Otherwise you get only
2-channel output.
