spawning new copy of IE

When I click on a link in IE or Outlook Express that should open in a new
window nothing happens. Those annoying popups don't come up either but I
really would like for the links to work. I'm using XP Pro and IE 6. It
worked ok for over a year. Does anybody have any idea what might be wrong?

Hi Ted,

Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express if either are open.

Start/run "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes)

Control panel/Internet options/programs tab, click on "reset all web
settings"

Reopen and retry the links in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

Rick,

Thanks for your respose.

Tried the above including rebooting and the links still won't open.

When I click on a link there does seem to be some disk activity but nothing
happens.

Any ideas.

Hi,

Expand a new copy of urlmon.dll, then repeat the above procedure. Start/run
msconfig, click on "expand file" (general tab)

File to expand: urlmon.dll
From: X:\I386
To: C:\Windows\system32

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386. If so, change the
"from" line accordingly. This assumes a default installation to C:\Windows.
If your installation is in a different folder, such as C:\Winnt, change the
"To" path accordingly. Reboot when finished.

Rick,
Tried the above and it's still doing the same thing. Do you have any other
ideas?

Appreciate your help.

Hi,

Did you get a "successful" message when you reregistered the dll file? Also,
do you have any popup stopper-type programs installed?

Yes.
Also, do you have any popup stopper-type programs installed?

Yes. Popfilter.exe. I checked Task Manager and its not among the running
processes. It has to be loaded manually so it shouldn't be running
normally.

It could still be interfering, what happens if you uninstall it?

Now, with it uninstalled, repeat the original steps.

Same results. Links won't open in new windows.

The machine also appears to have the following two problems that might be
related:

Javascript doesn't execute in IE.

The computer can't created ActiveX controls.

Does this give you any idea of what is going on? Thanks again for your
help.

Looks like the Security Settings in IE are set too high. Open Internet
Options, click Security and select Default Level (should be Medium).
