Spanning volume across two partitions on boot disk

I read in a recent thread (either here or in the Win2K general group)
that it was possible to span a volume across two partitions, however
looking in Help in Disk Management I see that you cannot extend a boot
volume. Is this true or am I misreading/misunderstanding something? I
thought the advice given in the thread I rememeber reading was dealing
with doing just that.

TIA

I know you can span a volume with XP Pro. Which OS are you running? If you're running XP Home and it still won't span then you may need to install a second hard drive.

XP Pro. This is a laptop. 20GB drive was re-imaged using a binary image
for a 10GB drive so only half the drive is partitioned. I was thinking I
could create another partition and use disk management to span the
volume across both partitions but read that can't extend boot volume
using DM. I have a possible solution using Linux fdisk but was trying to
avoid trying that.
