SpamAssassin (win32) - Ping John Corliss

Gordon Darling

Had a look at "SpamAssassin for Outlook" over the weekend. The source file
(http://sa.reusch.net/saoutlook-src-0.01.0003.zip) contains a binary of
spamassassin.exe and the normal SA config "rules" files.
The "source" included in the zip is in the form of VB project files and
I don't have access to a machine with Visual Basic installed at the
moment so going into it in depth is not an option.

The spamassassin.exe doesn't seem to work on my one and only Win98 box
"The current release, 0.01.0003, has been tested only with Outlook XP." and
it's unclear if you need an ActivePerl licence from www.activestate.com -
"Currently, SA is converted to a windows binary using PerlApp from
ActiveState".

There are two installers for the ActivePerl program, one uses the MSI
installer and the other is a zip.

http://downloads.activestate.com/ActivePerl/Windows/5.8/ActivePerl-5.8.2.808-MSWin32-x86.msi
http://downloads.activestate.com/ActivePerl/Windows/5.8/ActivePerl-5.8.2.808-MSWin32-x86.zip

It might be worth trying it on your machine
(http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/saoutlook/saoutlook-0.02.01.exe?download)
and seeing if you can get the SpamAssassin part to work on your machine.

The alternatives (http://www.openhandhome.com/howtosa260.html) look
distinctly hairy!

I'll continue to hunt for a win32 version for you.

All the best.

Geez Gordon, I appreciate all your help, but really you needn't go all
out on this. Sooner or later somebody will come up with a Windows
port. Of course, by then I'll probably be using Linux anyway. 80)>

Besides, I don't get *any* spam since having my ISP change my user ID.

I'd really like to see a good port of SpamAssassin to Windows. I'll keep
looking out.

Well the alternative seems to be Longhorn and "Trusted Computing". I don't
think we want to go down that road!

Glad to hear it. As an aside, my two Hotmail accounts were up until
recently completely unusable due to the volume of spam they were getting
(2 to 300 a day). However, Hotmail's new filters seem to be nearly 100%
effective. Useful as a throwaway address but that gets you back into
"Microsoft .Net Passport" territory!

All the best

Bill Gates thinks it's a good idea to CHARGE for each email sent.
Seems like every idea he's coming up with nowadays is a bad one. Well,
"good" from his viewpoint, I suppose.

My Yahoo account doesn't get any spam.... yet. Yahoo just (day before
yesterday) instituted a "Bulk" folder for all spam to be sent. That
way, if a message you want gets accidentally marked as spam, you can
still look for it in the "Bulk" folder. Unfortunately but
understandably, that folder counts towards your 4 mb limit.

I'd like to know what software they're using for filtering. Bet it's
some derivative of SpamAssassin.

Problem with that of course (if only 4 mb) is it'll only take a virus
like MyDoom to fill it quickly or a mail bomb attack would cripple the

I believe Yahoo use a managed solution (possibly BrightMail though there
are others like MessageLabs) which are multi-layered using more than one
A/V solution and more than one anti-spam filtering system.
