[SPAM] server side rules

System Running Exchange Server 2000 + Brightmail. Brightmail flags spam
with by prepending [SPAM] in the message subject field. When users come
start outlook, all their messages including [SPAM] messages get read in.

Most users have setup a rule to move the [SPAM] to a folder or deleted
items. In the case of weekend and vacations, the volume of [SPAM]
messages is incredible and takes too long for users to load. One user
wants Exchange Server to handle moving these files to some folder when
he is gone from his PC such as weekends, vacations or logs off for the
night.

The Brightmail Technical support say to contact Exchange Server
knowledgeable people to find an answer. Is there some way to create a
spam folder on the Exchange Server for a specific user and have those
email flagged as spam moved into that folder as soon as they are
flagged? If so, how to do this?

I know people will want to suggest other clever fixes, but the users are
not interested in those. Someone suggested to him to change his email
address so he wouldn't get so much spam. This type of solution is cute,
but not the answer to the question.

What version of outlook? Are the spam folders in the exchange mailbox or on
the local machine? words in the subject rule should be a server side rule
and run when outlook is not running, provided the spam folder is also in the
exchange mailbox.

1) There are no spam folders right now with the possible exception that
a user might have made a folder on their own. But for sake of the
question, pretend we don't have any.

2) I believe most users are Outlook 2003. We have one person running
Thuderbird from a Solaris 10x86 system.

With Outlook 2003 connecting to the exchange server, you can enable cache
mode and set junk filtering on high. Otherwise they can create rules to move
messages with [spam] in the subject to a spam folder they create, the
deleted items folder or delete it permanently.

With t-bird or any other client, including Outlook accessing the mailboxes
using pop3/imap mode, you can not filter on the server.

I am sorry, I am not explaining this correctly I think. We have people
who have been doing what you suggested for a few years.

This is a new thing. Perhaps it is not possible.

It's possible, as long as they use Outlook and connect to the exchange
server directly (not using pop or imap) - they can create a rule to move
messages and since it's a server side rule, it should run server side, as
the messages arrive.

t-bird and other pop3 clients will not be able to filter server side.
