spam blocker

This is not directly related to viruses per se, but my IP now offers spam
blocking. I would normally receive about 25 messages in the morning when
I turned on the computer. From the 25, 23 or so would be spam (along with
a few with attachments of questionable origin). I now receive two or
three messages in the morning.

I already use a spam blocker on my computer which moves spam to a special
folder, but it's nice having this stuff removed before I get a chance to
look at it. No need to respond, I just am very happy that my IP finally
is doing something about spam. I'm sure I'll have a few 'good' messages
blocked, but if someone really wants to contact me, they can via other
means. I hope this trend catches on.

I hope this trend catches on.

It is, primarily because the ISP's are always looking for ways to increase
/retain their revenues, and inclusion of anti-spam is becoming an
increasingly common way of offering a service (sometimes chargable) which
they hope will retain users, or provide sufficient interest (no doubt with
other services) to increase their user base.

Its pretty rare for ISP's to do things out of the kindness of their heart,
so enjoy while its there :)

The other nice thing, is that some of this spam being blocked will hopefully
reduce exposure of the average user to mails intended to entice them to
sites designed for identity theft, or delivery of backdoors or stealers
through known vulnerabilities.

The problem is far from solved, and does not negate the need for local
desktop AV and malware detection... but, its a step in the right direction
:)

My ISP introduced Brightmail spam blocking about a month ago. My spam
dropped immediately by about 95%. I was handling all the spam myself
using my own methods that worked fine. However the cost of downloading
was become expensive so handling spam without the need for any
downloads is great.

The only risk is false positives.
