spacing numbered lists

I just installed 2007. I am doing a double spaced numbered list. However, I
want single spacing when the number is more than one line long. In other
words, I just want the numbers to be double spaced, not what is contained in
each number. No matter what I try, I either have everything single spaced or
everything double spaced. What do I need to do?
