spacing in word document

My professor has preformatted a document for editing and submission. The
problem is, when choose hide/show, her spacing is different. When I use the
tab key, I am getting a small arrow and only one space. If I use the tab key
twice, I am getting two arrows, but the correct amount of space. Is there
another way to insert such space so that only one arrow and the correct
amount of space shows in the show/hide feature?

For one-time use, you set your tab stops in the ruler at the top of
the window. Click where you want the tab stop to be. Once you have a
tab stop there, you can drag it back and forth on the ruler.
(Following paragraphs that you make by typing Enter at the end of a
paragraph will inherit its tab stops.)

The type of tab stop is chosen with the tiny tab stop icon at the far
left end of the ruler.

If you want it in all your (say) Normal paragraphs, you Modify the
Style (right-click on the style name in the Styles & Formatting panel,
and choose Modify, then Format > Tabs) to have tabs where you need
them.

How you get at that panel depends on your version of Word.
