Spacing before paragraph

I am having difficulty with styles and the spacing before
a paragraph. In Word '97, if a paragraph had 10 pt
spacing after and the following paragraph had 12 pt
spacing before, the total space between the two
paragraphs would be 22 pts. In Word 2002 it seems if I
have 10 pts after the first paragraph and then 12 pts
before the following paragraph, the total space between
paragraphs would be 12 pts. I have found the spacing
before a paragraph includes the spacing of the previous
paragraph plus the difference. (Similarly if the spacing
before the paragraph is less, eg 8pts, than the spacing
after the previous paragraph, eg 10 pts, the spacing
between the paragraph will be the spacing after the first
paragraph i.e. 10 pts.)

Is this a new 'feature' of Word 2002? How can the style
be set so that the space before a paragraph doesn't
include the spacing from the previous paragraph? I have
found articles which relate to the 'Don't add space
between paragraphs of the same style' check box, but in
my case I am using different styles every paragraph. Is
there an option which I can 'turn off'.

This was introduced with W2000. by default, the spacing between paragraphs
is the greater of the respective before and after values, not their sum. To
change this, go to Tools > Options > Compatability: check 'Don't use HTML
paragraph auto spacing'

Look in the compatibility options.
