spaces in file name replaced with %20

With no regularity that I can discern, when I type a file name in File/Save
(or File/Save As) that includes spaces, Word will save the file with each
space replaced by %20.

It happens only rarely, and I have disregarded it after searching Google and
finding nothing. But today it happened on a different computer, unrelated to
the one on which I've previously experienced this trouble.

What's up, and how can I avoid? Thanks!

Stop using blank spaces in your file names.

Personally, I fine the Windows long name to be a non-compliant abuse and do
my best to stay within the confines of the old DOS 8-3 for file names.

That's what is known as a trivial solution.

'Anyone else have more substantive info?

Guess we'll be holding our breath till hell freezes over in anticipation of
a "non-trivial expert" to enter into the realm of this NG!

I've never encountered this is Word. If it happens only in Word then
I'd rule out any macros that may be intercepting your FileSaveAs
command. (FileSave calls the FileSaveAs routine as needed).

- Go to Tools/Macro/Macros and make sure "Macros in" reflects "All
active templates and documents".
- See if there are any macros named "FileSaveAs"
- Select the macro and see if the Edit or Delete command is available
- If it is then either Delete the macro or click "Edit" and place an
"X" in front of the macro name to prevent it from automatically
running until you can determine what the macro is actually doing

If delete is unavailable then chances are it is stored in a global
template. A global template is a template located in your Startup
folder that is automatically loaded when Word starts. You can find a
list of these under Tools/Templates and Add-Ins.

In the Macros dialog box, narrow down the list of macros using "Macros
in" at the bottom until you have determined which template contains
the macro.

Once you locate the template then either open the template and
delete/rename the macro or move the template out of the folder so it
will no longer be used.

Global templates are typically stored in your Word\Startup folder or
Office\Startup. Your Word\Startup folder can be determined by going to
Tools/Options/File Locations to verify this location. The
Office\Startup folder will be located in the installation path for
Office.

When this happens, is it possible that you are saving to a network drive or
just to your local drive? Also are these new files, or are you editing a
file?

I believe it happens exclusively when I save to a network drive. And it only
occurs when I am newly naming a file (not editing and saving with old file
name).

Why do you ask/where does that lead?

Incidentally, this behavior seems to have been reported by at least one
other poster to this forum. see 8/4/2004 post entitled
"filenamew1%20%filenamew2" by (e-mail address removed). However, she didn't
seem to get the issue resolved.

Thanks,

/Bill

See if turning off "update links on save" in
Tools/Options/General/Web options/Files helps at all.

Try Cindy's suggestion of turning off update links on save. If that doesn't
work. Can you start Word with the /safe switch to see if the problem persists?

Also, are the network drives that you are saving to mapped to drive letters,
or do you save to a UNC path like //server/folder/file.doc
Also, are you saving with the .doc file extension or something else?
