SP3 stops Microsoft update working

B

Brian

Installed the official SP3 on a brand new Dell Inspiron Core 2 Duo 2.66 with
4 G RAM last night before installing any programs. It immediately stopped the
Windows update site from working any further - any attempted installations
failed, so I couldn't update Office etc after loading them. Did a system
restore to remove SP3 and all was fine again. Any thoughts?

Manually install Windows Update Agent 3.0.

You can do this after you install SP3 and it will fix it.

1. Download the new Agent (but do not Run it yet) to your Desktop (so you
can find it below) :

X86 Version:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/W...one/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

2. Start, Run, CMD

In the black box:

net stop wuauserv
"%userprofile%\Desktop\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce (don't forget
the quotation marks)
net start wuauserv exit

Thanks to Bill Castner for putting me onto it.

Here is a fix for those who have issues updating after installing sp3
copy only the text between the ~~~~ (tilde) lines and paste to a new text
file then rename it to FixMicrosoftScrewUP.bat ... after that double click
the .bat file and let it run. After that completes, your Windows update will
work properly again.
hope this helps... (problem is related to the sp3 corrupting the .dll
files that windows update uses)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I haven't tried SP3 again yet but if the
solutions don't work I will post again.
