SP3 for XP

Kris, I have an answer for you and it surprised me. You can slipstream an
XP Gold cd and the SP3 RC presently availible to the public and produce an
XPsp3 cd that installs XP without a problem. It activates too.

I guess the fact it works is a problem for MS since they have a block when
you try to install SP3 on a running installation of XP Gold (you get a
message that the minimum prerequisite is SP1). It doesn't make much sense
to me why they would bother with the block if the simple expedient of
slipstreaming gets around it. Unless, of course, slipstreaming somehow
removes a bug in the upgrade process.
 
No, it means pre-release software as any of the online dictionaries will
tell you. Even PC Magazine defines it as follows:

Alpha version and Beta version are related terms.

PC Mag only defines anything to what their advertisers say is allowed.
 
In this case they are using the Wikipedia and other online dictionaries
definition.

I just downloaded and installed autostreamer 1.0.33 and I'll try that when
sp3final comes out.

I have never played with Virtual PC so downloaded that as well and will
play with that with the new cd. Fun toy!!!

Question: with autostreamer, it gives me a choice of original CD, or local
store. Would I take the old sp2 slipstreamed cd to be "local store", or
pretend it's "original"?

Again, thanks!!! (and yes, I will expect any and all of this to change in
the next month so I will check the sites again to be sure I'm on the latest
info!)
 
The cd you use is the "original". If an XP SP2 cd (hologramed or
slipstreamed) is in the drive then that is the "original".

Probably very true.

But I'm with you; to me, whether something is technically an alpha
test version, beta, pre-release, release candidate, or anything other
that a released version doesn't matter. It hasn't been released yet,
and that's because Microsoft (or whichever vendor makes it) doesn't
yet consider it good enough to release. True, the later along the
series of test versions it is, the less likely you are to have
problems, but installing anything other than a released version is
foolhardy, unless you are someone who enjoys playing around with these
things, and also has a spare, non-production machine to run it, and
don't care if you lose everything on the machine.

My personal practice, especially with operating systems, is to avoid
anything that isn't a release version. I can wait.

No, you can't. You have Vista installed on your machine and it is most
certainly not a "release version" but a BETA with the BETA testers
actually *buying* the BETA and testing it for free for Microsoft. As far
as I'm concerned, Vista won't really be ready to be released until at
least SP2, just as XP wasn't really ready to be released until its SP2.

issues with the OS if you try to go directly from XP Gold to SP3 and that is
why the upgrade is blocked by the standalone package. Apparently installing
with a slipstreamed XP Gold + SP3 cd is not a great idea even though it
works to do it. So be warned. The bottom line is that a Vista Gold cd is
not a good base to use to build an XP SP3 cd. What I would do is find a
friend with an XP SP1 or SP2 cd that matches your edition and have him make
you a copy.

slipstreamed XP cd as:
1) original or
2) local store
