sp3 for XP Pro machines

Hello all,
I am having a problem with SP 3 for WinXP Pro. I downloaded from the
download area needed it to be able to install on 8 laptops and 12 desktop
units in our office. I had a laptop that already had sp3 installed on it, I
had done it earlier. I have had a strange failure after installing sp3 on a
laptop. The system will start to boot up, get the flash screen then the
screen goes dark with the cursor arrow that I can move around. It sets this
way for about 3 mintues then hangs up. NO error messages blue screen of death
nothing. When I reboot the laptop and go into safe mode everything seems ok
comes up I checked the event viewer found nothing then when I try to reboot
from safe mode I get windows is shutting down and it hangs again. I left it
this way for 3 hours this afternoon and nothing happened. I can uninstall sp3
and the computer is ok. Any ideas as to what may be wrong. found info on auto
reboots but they didn't really help. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Much trouble can be traced back to improper preparation of the target
system.
