ive got a five month old pc it came with some of sp2 updates preloaded on the
system does this mean that my prescott processor is set up to run sp2 with
out it freezing up on first reboot or do i still need the patch from
microsoft update

No. The updates you are seeing are simply updates that were released post
the SP1 release date. You do need to download the fix for the prescott issue
to make certain you avoid this problem.
 
Hi,

It couldn't have come with SP2 preloaded 5 months ago, as it wasn't
distributed then. What you are seeing are updates that are included in SP2,
but you do not yet have the full SP2 package unless it specifically states
it when you run winver from a start/run prompt.

Is your prescott ready? Depends on the microcode in use. This read may help

When you do install SP2, all of the current patches that you see will be
collapsed and you will only see SP2.
 
Stop asking the question and start reading the answers. Several people,
including myself, have answered your posts regarding that hotfix.
