I'm getting an "access denied" error message.

problem is i'm not on a network.....just a single ol
computer here and i'm, of course, the admin.

why is access denied?

gets about halfway t hrough the installation, says
access denied and then uninstalls itself.

ok some more details.

begins update. the progression is as follows.....

inspecting current config
- performing inventory......................ok
- running processes before installation...................ok
- backing up files......................ok
- backing up registry.................ok
- creating restore point....................ok
- installing files
at this point it begins installing. the progress bar gets to not quite 50%
and it appears its trying to install the file "fsxapi.dll" when i get the
ACCESS DENIED.
SP2 then proceeds to uninstall itself, tell me my system was only partially
updated and may be unstable.

hope this helps.

malke using your advice it appears the errors are twofold:

#E197 many variations of windows\inf\accessor.inf to windows\inf
use copyinf instead

#099 writing of c:\windows\inf\wuaw.adm to c:\windows\inf
can cause problems

now what?

and thanks for the help!!

Did you read through all the information at Mr. Michna's site - not just
the bit connected with the above error? The only times I've had
problems installing SP2 on a machine were when 1) the machine had
malware; 2) the operating system was somehow damaged by viruses and/or
malware; 3) the operating system was a pirated version.

I'm not saying yours is any of those things; after all, I really know
nothing about your computer. Did you do any preparation before
attempting to install SP2? I always do these things:

1. Make sure the system is 100% virus/malware-free and running well.
2. Back up any important data (or know that the client has already done
this).
3. Visit the OEM's website (if machine is OEM) to download and install
any patches that need to be applied prior to installing SP2.
