Bruce, try downloading SP2 ( if you dont have the disk ) and
loading it in Safe Mode. Ive been getting the same Crypto
errors on a clients PC since SP1 came out. He ran it SP1 free
for the past year, but we've decided with all the worms etc we
need to figure this problem out.
Obviously I had tried all the net posted fixes, from the
microsoft methods to some others that various techs have come
up with.
Here's a page to check out:
http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html
However, none of these seemed to work for me. Safe Mode DID
work, iwithout other fixes, but I got another error "cannot
write to or read from the database" during the "Set Restore
Point" section of the SP2 install, however, I found a batch
file fix for that problem here:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#..._Service_Pack_2
Oddly enough, when I first attempted to load SP2 and received
the Cryptographic error, I knew to restart it in Services, and
it worked as soon as I did ( much to my surprise, having
attempted this on the SP1 install unsuccesfully ) However, at
reboot, I got a "Missing or Corrupt etc etc pci.sys file"
I attempted to restore that file via the Recovery Console but
to no avail ( ie: it would expand, but still not start XP )
So I reformatted, and went with the Safe Mode ( as all future
attempts to restart the Crypto service did NOT allow me to
install SP2 )
As Im sure you can predict, Ive been pulling my hair out over
this one, in fact the client is so frustrated he went and
bought a brand new Toshiba laptop and will be passing down
this box to his daughter
BUT!! I did fix it, and SP2 is loaded and OUT THE DOOR goes
this nightmare of a job.
WHY?? does this computer act this way? Ive literally installed
100's of XP's and never had this problem except on this one
machine.. Ive had success with the identical hardware config
and motherboard. ( Asus a7v8x-x ) I even RMA'd the hard drive
at one point ( a year ago ) And we replaced the RAM and
ribbons. I ran extensive processor and mobo burn-in tests and
nothing came up. The only thing I can think is that either the
CD-Roms are both wonky ( brand new, and I tried both ) and are
not reading the Install Disk at exactly the point it is
installing certificate settings, OR Asus and MS teamed up to
insert a chip which busts pirated XP versions ( Highly
unlikely.. ) but considering Ive installed the same XP Pro
Corp Cd on multiple Asus boxes, it just NEVER MADE SENSE,
still doesnt, but Im glad it works, and I hope I never have to
deal with this again, even though I seem to have it beat
finally! 8)
