SP2 won't install FTP.exe is open or running

I am running XP home edition and when attempting to install Service Pack 2 I
get the following error message -> C:\windows\system32\ftp.exe is open or in
use by another application.

If I check the task manager ftp.exe is not running.

Also, I don't know if this is part of the issue or not but if I go to the
start menu, run then enter cmd.exe I get an error regarding the path

I have run spybot, adaware and antivirus software. Nothing is showing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I figured this one out on my own. I had to take ownership of cmd.exe,
ftp.exe and mmc.exe. After that the command window opened properly and SP2
downloaded.

Hope this helps someone else out :)

Ran into this same problem on an Windows XP Home system.
Believe this problem to most likely be caused by virus or spyware
which caused ftp.exe to be recoded so that access is denied to even th
administrator.
The problem with XP Home Edition is that there is no permissio
settings to be able to take ownership of files.
In order to fix for XP Home, you need to boot to the recovery consol
on the XP setup CD.
Then path to the system32 folder where ftp.exe located and renam
ftp.exe to whatever you want. I just renamed to ftpexe.old . Then yo
can boot back into windows and install service pack 2 just fine.
Once SP2 installation is complete, you'll want to go into the i38
folder either on the XP setup CD or on your hard drive and copy ftp.ex
to system32, because Service pack 2 does not replace the file
