I use a Toshiba notebook with 224 MB RAM working memory, win xp sp2.
I used to run it under sp1 but as I now I use it also on the internet I
thought it necessary to update to sp2. This seems to be an error as it
became slow.
Therefore I shall uninstall sp2. any better idea ?

Buy more memory and increase your overall performance.

Being on the Internet without proper protection is foolish at best. Running
Windows XP with less than 512MB of memory (I suggest 1GB for a laptop or
older machine) means you are surely not getting what you COULD be getting
out of that machine.

Memory is very inexpensive - and getting less and less costly...

http://www.crucial.com/

Use the "Memory Advisor" tool to select your manufacturer/model and find out
what memory you need. Usually their price and warranty make it worthwhile
to just purchase straight from Crucial - but you can buy from whomever you
desire. Just take the detailed specs the page gives you on the memory your
system will accept and get it elsewhere. Want to look online - I suggest
http://www.pricewatch.com/ to look for a store you trust, a price you can
afford, etc.

That's so self evident. You would do so ? I run ZASS and never had any
difficulties.

I was told by Toshiba people that you can't upgrade after about 9 months
because the memory is notebook specific and will ni longer be produced.
Now, the crucial website and you say the exact contrary.

I am not sure whether crucial also serves European countries. Do you
know similar sites that sell in Europe ?

Right. I don't see where you post see.
so lets say here that I found that that crucial.com also now has a site
in Europe (but I have the impression that it "forgets" to adapt the
price in € to the falling value of the dollar :-(

As I stated "without protection", I did not specify that Windows XP SP2 was
the *only* protection - but it is wise to stay up to date - even if you have
other protection. Saying that you have 'never had any difficulties' doesn't
mean much. You may never have difficulties at all - but becoming complacent
with whatever protection you might have and not taking advantage of other
free protections that might be available to you would be unwise at best.
There's a reason products get updated. Soon there will even be an SP3 that
integrate changes since SP2 and implement a few others - and SP2 was
released in 2004, so it's not like there hasn't been time to figure out some
of the quirks it may cause. ;-)

As for Crucial - if you visited their shipping international FAQ:
http://www.crucial.com/store/international_shipping.aspx

They state:
"I am located outside of the United States. Should I order from Crucial.com
or Crucial.com/uk?
Crucial Technology has offices in the United States and the United Kingdom.
If you are located in Europe, please visit www.crucial.com/uk. Customers in
all other countries should place their order at www.crucial.com. Ordering
at the correct site will help expedite your shipment."

So - in your case, visit: http://www.crucial.com/uk/

I also gave you the "pricewatch" site - that might lead you to more vendors
to order from given the specifications from Crucial's web site.

As for Toshiba telling you, "... the memory is notebook specific and will
n[o] longer be produced ..." - that was either an outright lie from them or
a "we don't sell it directly after that time frame and we aren't going to
recommend you go elsewhere to get it." or a human being not knowing what
they were talking about - but talking anyway. ;-)
