SP2 Trying to force itself on me again

Hello.

When SP2 came out last fall, I got great advice on this site for how to
stop the Critical Update program trying to jam it down my throat. I
made some registry modification.

Now SP2 is back on the Critical Update list.

I have all the same reasons not to want to install it.

Anyone have ideas for how to keep myself on the original XP home, but
still get other critical updates?

Thanks.

Microsoft no longer supports the original release
of Windows XP. I suggest you install SP2, or at
least install SP1. Otherwise, you'll not be able
to obtain any updates from the Windows Update
web site.

Over 180 million PCs now have SP2 installed,
why not install it?

Thanks for your suggestion --

But I still run software and devices that that manufacturers
specifically state will be broken by SP2.

Stephan;
The tool Microsoft released to delay SP-2 expired a few days ago.
Microsoft is not trying to "jam it down my throat"
SP-2 can be easily controlled just like any other update by changing the
settings for Windows Update.

You should also contact the manufactures and ask when they will fix a
problem most reputable manufacturers had resolved before SP-2 was released.
Also ask them what customers are doing that buy new computers now since it
is getting more difficult to buy a computer without SP-2.

Jupiter -

How do you control Windows Update to control its desire to load SP2 on
the machine? Sorry if it is obvious... but I've tried lots of things.

As for "manufacturers" of hardware and software I am using -- I must
admit that it is out of date, not even written for Windows XP. But the
company is under, and the combo is not available by anyone else. It is
a custom package for planning theatrical production. There is nothing
out there to replace it... if I can't keep SP2 off my machine I'll have
to have a dedicated SP2 server, and that will get messy because there
are network components to the software.

Thanks for your help and advice.

You cannot control the desire of anyone/anything. All you can do is
manually update your PC once a month (new patches come out the second
tuesday of each month) and never select to install Service Pack 2. Turn off
Automatic updates and trudge alone independent.

Using http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, choosing "Custom Install" and
then unchecking the box to install SP2 and checking the box under it to
"Hide this update" should at least make it into a stalker you know is there
but never see from the update site....

If I were you and this software package is that important to you - I would
purchase a disk imaging application (Symantec Ghost for example) and make a
full backup of the system every month as well. Burn those to DVD or buy an
external USB/Firewire hard drive to write to.. Something so you have a full
working install that can be restored quickly.
