Can someone point me in the right direction here

Can one now install XP patches on a XPe images?

Do you need the QFE installer component to do this - and where can I
get it?

Does SUS use the XP patches?

Does sus differ for Xp and Xpe

Finally the BIG question
Can you use SMS to deploy relevent XP patches to XPe machines with the

LabRat,
Can one now install XP patches on a XPe images?

Yes, you can. Either manually unwrapping an XP Pro patch and deploying the required files and registry to device.
Or using Desktop Installer or just a proper set of system components in your Configuration to be able to install XP Pro QFEs
directly at run time.
Do you need the QFE installer component to do this

Not necessarily. The QFE installer component is nothing more than just a set of system component dependencies that must be present
in your image in order to launch the XP Pro Update installers (the version after May, 2004).
- and where can I get it?

Does SUS use the XP patches?

Yes, it does.
Does sus differ for Xp and Xpe

XP PRo uses WU (MS public SUS server).
WU server is not availalbe for XPe device directly but you can can set up your own SUS server that will download the patches from MS
and deploy them automatically (or manually, depending how you set it up) to all yours device with SUS clients.

Xpe SMS advanced client

Why not?
However, please keep in mind that SMS does not know anything about the SUS/WU specific patch format(s). You will have to either
unwrap a QFE patch manually and create SMS package to deploy the patch files and registry entries, or to create a SMS package that
will upload the patch exe to the device and launch it there (make sure than that all the Desktop Installer dependencies are in your
image). Similar to what you would do with DUA but just a bit simpler as SMS client/server solution is more complex and has a bunch
of graphical tool to make packages.
