Chris

hey,
thanks for the help in advance.
i downloaded and installed xpSP2 onto a brand new Dell
Inspiron 1150. now the machine is slower then death.
boot is very slow now, regular operation of the machine
is slow, slow, slow now, and using it across my home
network is extremely slow. i have turned of the security
alerts, turned off all but norton antivirus and firewall
in the startup/notification area, and still very slow as
compared to before installing SP2. any ideas?
thanks,
Chris

The best fix for the present is to uninstall SP2 using add remove programs.
You could leave SP2 on board and roll back your processor driver but while
this works for some it may introduce some instabilities.

Your second step is to complain to Dell and ask them when they are going to
support SP2. It should not be up to users to fix Dell's incompetence by
trying out flaky fixes found by other customers.

Richard.

Chris, I have just re-read your post. As the Dell machine is brand new and
does not support the current version of Windows you must be entitled to
return it for a full cash refund as it is not fit for the purpose. Whether
you decide to replace it with another, probably more expensive, Dell machine
that does work properly is your choice.
