I installed SP2 last week. Since then I have had Windows tell me that I need
to activate Windows twice.I've reactivated on both occasions, but don't want
to keep doing it every week (assuming it will let me!)

I have not made any hardware or driver changes and am using a legitimate
copy of 98-XP Upgrade, which I've had for a couple of years, previously
without issue.

I can't find anything about this anywhere, so was wondering if anyone else
had come across this or could provide a cause/solution?

TIA

if you activated thru the internet and it still calls for activation there is
an issue, there is a fix for this after activation, a small program ( find it
thru the MS Knowledge base) or call in activate toll free and tell them whats
going on or go winxpsp2 chat support, online rep will give you the answer

I had the same problem two years ago, well before SP2. After the third
reactivation I used the phone method. I was given a number to enter
and no longer needed to activate, even when I did hardware upgrades.
Installing SP2 on that system didn't make any difference but I needed
to reinstall XP last week and it wanted to be activated. Online
activation worked OK.

So, I suggest you use the phone method.

Try repairing the registry entries for the activation DLL files.

Use Start- Run and enter the following text in the dialog box:
regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

Then do it again with the following text:
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

Good luck

Thanks to you both.

It brought it up again, saying I'd made major hardware changes and had three
days to reactivate so I did by phone and repaired the registry as suggested.
So far, it's been okay since but it's only been a couple of days.

Still not sure what caused/is causing it but do have a couple of ideas.
After installing SP2 I ran Symantec Systemworks checkup. It reported a few
errors in the registry and 'repaired' (deleted?) them. Maybe one of them was
something to do with this. Also, though I doubt this will affect it, my
graphics card overheated a few weeks back when the fan failed. I've fitted a
new fan but the card now falls over when asked to anything involving 3D
textures (though strangely, DirectX diagnostic works okay). Maybe it's
faulting in the interrogation somehow, but according to the WPA spiel
changing a graphics card in itself shouldn't cause a reactivation request.

I'll just have to see how it goes.
