SP2 made my NIC invisible?

W

Will Roberts

After installing SP2, my network works without any problems.
But now there is no network listed under Network Connections and no network
icon in the taskbar.

Device Manager does not display my NIC (3Com 3C905TX), and does not list any
Network Adaptors.
When "show hidden devices" is selected, Network Adaptors are displayed, but
the only reference to the 3Com NIC is "3Com 3C905TX-based Ethernet Adapter
(Generic) - Packet Scheduler Miniport"
(Scan for New Devices and reboots don't help)

If I open Network Connections and click "Set up a home or small office
network", the wizard displays the error:
Cannot Complete the Network Setup Wizard
The wizard cannot find your network hardware.

If anyone has any pointers on an invisible functioning NIC after SP2 patch,
I would appreciate it.

Hi

Registering atl.dll and hnetcfg.dll might help.

From Start/Run, run the following commands:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll

then

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\hnetcfg.dll

Adding this command to the list as well:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netshell.dll

Thanks, but that did not fix it.

Will,

what happens when you run the hardware wizard and try to install
the network adapter?

The wizard does not see the 3Com NIC.

I swapped the 3Com with a Linksys NIC: the startup wizard correctly
identified it, but again the NIC was functional but not visible. Add
hardware wizard did not detect it, either.

Very strange.

Thanks-

Will,

strange and unusual indeed.

If you cannot determine the cause, the second last way out is a
repair installation of Windows XP, using a full install CD, not
a limited OEM CD. You'll find some more detailed info on that in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.

I am having exactly the same issue. One additional piece
of information... when I load SP-2 on a stand alone
system it works fine!!!! no issues!!!! As soon as I
jopin it to the domain Bang!! the network connections
goes away the firewall settings are corrupt.... and I
can't restore them.

Tried looking at the GPO's but nothing really jumps out
at me as the culpret....

Suggestions anyone?

Tried this as well as the repair.... after joining the
domain... Network Connections go away and the Firewall
settings get corrupted... looks like a GPO issue but
can't find the culpret...
