SP2 login:password@ no longer works in IE

Why the hell can I no longer access sites which use
"login:p[email protected]" type addresses after installing SP2? All
you get now is a error message from IE without Ie even attempting to
access the site.

I'm guessing its M$ taking a shotgun approach to the fraudsters and
spammers, but in the process they have broken a useful feature.

There any way to turn this stupid behaviour back to preSP2 (apart from
uninstalling SP2)?

A security update is available that modifies the default behavior of Internet Explorer for handling user information in HTTP and in HTTPS URLs:

[SP2 seems to include this update]
