SP2: Limited or no Connectivity?! - Unable to Rewew IP Address?!

Hi all,

I just installed SP 2 on my laptop which is connected to another PC via LAN
(crossover cable). Until I installed it, I never had any problems sharing
files with or accessing the PC. But it has all just changed!

After rebooting, the network notification informs me that I have "Limited or
no Connectivity". After trying to repair the connection, it then tells me it
was "Unable to Renew the IP Address".

I then installed SP 2 on the PC, hoping that it would solve the problem
....it didn't! It produced the exact same problems. How can this be fixed?
Surely MS tested this: at the moment, I have a connection between 2 systems
that is dead and useless ...all because I have installed SP 2!

For further reference, I have tried fixing the situation with the firewall
both on and off ....surely somebody has the answer, MS didn't after several
times of asking!

David,

This is Microsoft's way, starting with SP2, of informing you that your network
connection is set for automatic address assignment, but a DHCP server could not
be found, so it was assigned an APIPA address.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=220874

If you try to repair the connection, it will again try to contact a DHCP server
for address assignment. Since you're using a cross-over cable, again it is
unsuccessful, and fails.

Do you have connectivity between the two computers? If so, don't worry.

Chuck,

No, there is no connectivity between the 2 computers at all. I see this as
there are no shared directories listed in the Network Places folder on each
computer.

Dave,

OK, let's see where the problem is.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

From each computer, with all firewalls disabled, test connectivity and name
resolution:
1) Ping itself by name.
2) Ping itself by ip address.
3) Ping the other by name.
4) Ping the other by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (10 tests total).

What firewalls are involved on either computer, both now and in the past?

Andrew,

You wouldn't go to the doctor and insist upon the same medicine as your
neighbor, based upon having the same symptoms. Please don't assume your
computer problem is the same either.

Please start a new topic (with a different, and descriptive title) for help.
This will benefit both you, and the OP. And, it will help the helpers here find
your posts easier.

Cheers,
Chuck
