How do you get rid of the space that you lose when you install/uninstall SP2
several times? I hate that it writes a NEW uninstall folder each time it's
installed instead of using the existing folder.

I also need help to reinstall SP2 after I get the space back.

Why do you have to keep installing SP2?

Well, let's see. I got some kind of spyware in spite of running defender and
Pest Patrol. It corrupted something in Windows and I couldn't reboot. It
would hang and I would have to do a cold boot. I could boot into safe mode,
but nothing else. So I did a scan using both programs, and while Defender
didn't catch anything, Pest Patrol did. I got rid of the spyware, and it
still wouldn't reboot into anything but safe mode. So I repaired XP, and
lost SP2 in the process, since my system came with SP1. I tried to reinstall
before trying to uninstall - and got an error. So I uninstalled, and tried
to reinstall, still got the error (no mention of *what* the error was,
though.

So I uninstalled SP2 *again*, and almost had to restore XP fully. Now, I've
lost at least three to four gigs of hard drive space, since it created a NEW
uninstall folder somewhere (although I can't find them) each time I
installed it.

When you start to install SP2 it tells you where it is unpacking the files
to. Just start it and take notice this time of where it is going. Then go
there and delete all the old ones.

Information for removing uninstall files:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spack.htm

Different installs should not add a new uninstall folder.
But System Restore may take a Restore Point after each installation.
If there is a problem with System Restore it can continue to grow past the
preset maximums.
If System Restore is not yet at the pre-set maximum, size can continue to
increase until the maximum is reached and that is to be expected.

See this page for more about System Restore:
http://bertk.mvps.org/

I read somewhere that it *does* create a new uninstall for each
installation.

I'll have to see if I can't find the site.

Nancy;
If the uninstall files were created, they would be in the same folder and
they could be safely deleted at the other uninstall files referred in the
link I gave in my other post.
