sp2 installed or not?

I had SP2 Beta installed on my xp home ed system and things were working
fine, my system had not been so good for ages. Auto update decides that it
will automatically download the full version of SP2 and proceeds to do so.
After it has downloaded the prog then startys to install, halfway through
install it bombs out and says invalid handler or handle cannot install sp2.
I notice a slow down in boot times and errors and warnings in my event logs
so I follow the links to the sp2 support pages, whereupon I contact our MS
tekkies in Ireland. I tell them my problem and they ask me what the event
log says, I tell them that I have event warning ID 1015 and 1003. They tell
me that I need to uninstall sp2 and then reinstall it (most definately dats
your problem the lady tells me in that lovely Irish Brogue). She tells me to
go into cont panel>>add/remove progs then uninstall sp2 trouble is that
there is no sp2 listed so I cannot remove it (yes I did check list updates)
after much chatting with her colleagues she asks me to do a sys restore to a
week previous which my system said that it could not do. One of the other
tekkies told me to download the prog from download.com as he thought that
the version that I had downloaded from MS might have been corrupted due to
the high volume of downloads. This I did (it took hours) and then I
installed and rebooted, was confronted by the security center setup and I
thought that things were fine until I noticed that I still had errors in the
event log and that SP2 hadn't appeared in the add remove progs section of
control panel.

Now what I am asking is, do I have this thing fully installed or not? Why is
it not appearing in the add/rem progs as being an installed prog? why is
windows update saying that there are no updates to install.? I have checked
my installation history and the two attempts that I have made via windows
update have resulted in failure

Please help if you can

Hi

Best idea is to uninstall the Beta version first. You can see which version
is currently installed by:

Right clicking on My Computer and selecting properties or

Running

winver

from Start>Run or

Using Winkey + Pause/Break.

If SP2 is installed you may not be able to see it in Add/Remove Programs
until you enable 'Show Updates'.

thanks for that Will, unfortunately I have been through all that with the MS
xpsp2 support team (Ireland) on the phone. I have also tried a sys restore
(windows was unable to restore to any restore point). I have also tried cmd
line uninstall (doesn't recognise the command) and I have also tried a
repair through the recovery console (didnt recognise command)

Everything is showing wireless network icon, security centre etc etc I tried
going to a few sites and the pop up blocker is working, the information bar
which used to show me when active x was about to be downloaded isn't working
so you can understand that I need to completely uninstall all traces of SP2
and then do a clean install. I really do not want to format my system again
if I can help it. It took me 3 days to get everything back to the way I
wanted it last time.

Hi

What does

winver

from Start>Run show?

I think the problem is related to SP2 being installed over a Beta version.
If that is the case you may have to perform a 'Clean' install of XP.

Hi Will,
winver shows my xp build version and xpsp SP2 as being installed. It is also
showing as being installed in general tab of system in control panel. There
are no references to uninstall anywhere, how can this be? I have done
everything that I was asked to do in the install, I even uninstalled google
toolbar and Zone alarm thinking that these might have an effect on the
install process, but still no sign of it as being installed.

Is there a test that I can do to check to see whether or not it is
installed? I was busy googling trying to find an answer and came across xp
SP2 tools for developers/professionals, is there something in there that
could help me?

Hi

winver reports here:

Version 5.1(Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158:Service Pack2) and the entry
in Add/Remove Programs is:

Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Were given the option to save the uninstall files during the upgrade to SP2?

In Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs it should list Windows XP Service Pack 2
Further when you boot your system, where it used to show on the screen :
Microsoft Windows XP Professional or home 5.1.2600 Service pack 1 build 2600
it should now say Service Pack 2 in place of Service Pack 1

Since you been mulling around with this one for over a week now, just bite
the bullet and backup your important files, the format and reinstall, clean,
hopefully with a slipstreamed SP2 CD - it'll eliminate many problems,
especially since you've definitely got those beta blues gremlins lurking
about the system.
