SP2 etc

A few weeks ago a new piece of software was imposed on my computer by
Microsoft, informing me that support for SP1 and older versions of Windows
XP will be withdrawn in October of this year. I have to say I am very
reluctant to go for this upgrade, since my earlier attempts both ended in
disaster. My system was seriously disabled and all my familiar working
methods disrupted. As yet I have been unable to find the application which
brings this message to my attention with such monotonous regularity, so that
I might delete it.
Is there any truth in the rumour that this information software contains
some elements designed to destabilize computers in which it has been
installed for a certain amount of time? I ask this because ever since the
flag started to pop up at every bootup, my computer has been suffering major
breakdowns. Then, when I choose to send the automatically generated error
report to Microsoft, the solution to the problem is apparently that I need
to install SP2. Has Microsoft's marketing department gone avant-garde?
I am normally not a fan of conspiracy theory, but I have to admit that the
idea is plausable, knowing Microsoft's reputation over its customer support.
