SP2 download--how do it get it started?

T

Thomas Jones

From Tom:

I am trying to start the download of SP2 into my XP Home Edition. As
of now (Aug 21), SP2 is available only to users who have their
"Automatic Update" set.

Now, here is how I would like to do it:

In the Control Panel under Automatic Updates:

Set the radio button to:

"Notify me but don't automatically download or install them."

Question 1: Will this work for SP2? If so, how do I tell the
electronics how to start the download? Or do I need to use a
sub-option under Automatic Updates?

Question 2: Suppose my computer is turned off at such-and-such time.
Will the electronics be smart enough to start or restart the download
the next time I am online?

Question 3: How do I know, one way or the other, whether or not things
are correctly set up on my end to start the SP2 download?

Go to the Microsoft download web page and download it yourself - you don't
need the automatic update to do that.

Microsoft is limiting the daily number of SP-2 downloads. You may get SP-2 soon
or you can wait days. For more information, see FAQ #7:

From Tom:

From Tom to Kaylene:

I am willing to wait for days if necessary; Microsoft has a good
reason for limiting the number of downloads. However, I am concerned
about perhaps waiting for days, and days, and days, indefinitely,
having set things up incorrectly at my end.

Does anybody know if there is a way to find out if I have set things
up correctly on my end?
