Nehmo Sergheyev

Have Win XP home (SP1)
Had it running on 120 GB hard drive
Also had a copy of it on the shelf on a 15 GB HD

Shuttle AN35(N) Ultra m-board
CPU Type: AMD Athlon XP-A, 2079 MHz (6.25 x 333) 2800+
511 MB RAM

Tried to install SP2 via MS site for IT professionals
Downloaded, closed all apps, and tried to install.
Seemed to install okay, desktop displayed, system tray icons displayed,
ZA started, AVG started.
But nothing else would run, even task manager wouldn't start; IE
wouldn't start.

Rebooted couple of times.

Task Manager started.

Did a system restore back to before SP2.

Can't boot up. Blue screen.

Did a repair install of Win XP from the CD.

Still can't boot up. Blue screen, error 0x0000007B

Took out 120 GB HD and put in the 15 GB HD I had on the shelf. I'm
running off that now. Auto Update of this system (with the 15 GB HD)
just downloaded SP2. I'm not letting it install until I figure out what
happened.

Called MS (888) SP2-HELP (772-4357)

Tech provided no help but said another level would call me within 48
hours.
Case # SRX040824605385

I'm going to hook up the 120 GB as a slave to my working 15 GB and see
if I can read the 120 GB HD.

My phone numbers are home 913 766 4488 and cell 816 668 8581. If anyone
wants to call, feel free.

You've probably figured this out already, but in case you haven't seen it,
this site - http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm - says that a 0x0000007B error
indicates "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" - Windows lost access to the system
partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes:
Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage
adapter hardware, or a virus.

The BIG mistake.

Actually, I hadn't looked it up yet. Thanks for doing it for me. There
is, of course, a solution. I just have to read a bunch.

I just hooked up the 120 GB HD as a slave to the 15 GB HD. I can now see
everything on the 120.

I'm going to start by running scndsk on the 120. But that's about all I
have time for right now. Tonight I'll work on this more.

I just ran scndsk on both hard drives. It didn't report any problems.

You got what you were asking for by installing a version not intended for
your operating system....

Why is this version not intended for his operating system? I downloaded the
so-called IT version and installed it on three systems with no problems. It
is simply the full installation version.

This might fix it. Get a windows 98se boot disk with fdisk on it.
Boot fdisk

First make sure fdisk reports the partition active.

Type fdisk. Type Y and Select number 2
If not change to active.
Esc exits
Remove floppy disk. See xp finishes it update

If that does not work.
Even some people will disagree with me. This should work.

Insert windows 98se boot disk again.
Does not matter what file system you have.
At the command prompt
Type Fdisk /mbr

Remove disk. See xp finishes it update
I had boot problems because I have a dual boot system.
So it worked on both Ntfs & fat 32.
However windows xp repair console fixboot & fixmbr
did not. Actual made it worse. (Very Long story)

posting you phone numbers? are you nuts! because I know ... you live in the
913 area code .... Kansas City, Ks area ... and your cell phone 816 is from
the Kansas City, Mo area. now that we all know guess what expect a clone
of your cell phone by a crook and many new long distant phone calls to your
phone number

Root, why is it a big mistake to do the restore?
SP2 sets it's own restore point before it updates, so
presumably it can be used.

Huge waste of time. There's a purpose in going to SP2. Make an effort to
get SP2 working correctly. You'll have to eventually. There is very likely
NO sudden hotfix coming that's gonna make SP2 work better next time.

Wouldn't the real "big mistake" be putting home and cell numbers on a
newsgroup post?

- Nehmo -
My worst enemies already know my phone numbers. The same numbers are
printed on advertisements for my business. I've posted them before on
web sites and in NGs. I'm in more than one phone directory. I'm not
overwhelmed with phone traffic - not even solicitation calls.

I would be more than pleased to get a call on this XP SP2 problem.

My address and phone numbers are publicly available. Anybody can have
them. They've been that way for years. You are welcome to handle your
own personal info differently.

The issue is an unsuccessful installation of SP2.

No you don't have to go to xp sp2. Like I could go back to 98se. oh
wait. I have a dual boot system and use 98se.

Actual, I still use windows 95 on my old computer.
