SP2 and performing a windows XP repair

My XP disk is pre-SP2. I obtained SP2 via windows update. I am experiencing
some problems that I believe will require a repair using the XP disk. Does
SP2 have to be uninstalled prior to performing a repair?

No, but you will need to reapply SP2 after the Repair Install. If you have a
CD burner you should create a slipstreamed XP CD with SP2.
Look on the web page for links to creating the SP2 XP CD.
Click on the link below, or copy and paste the link into the address box
if using the web based newsgroup.

Note though that what was downloaded via Windows Update will be
inadequate; it needs the full set, either downloaded or from free CD

Right, and if he has the full SP2 package on CD he could just do a
repair install, then apply SP2 from the CD. In this case there isn't
really a need to make a slipstreamed WinXP SP2 CD, it couldn't hurt to
have one but it isn't necessary.

It is very useful for a repair reinstall - and sometimes if doing
installs, it *may* ask for a SP2 CD, which implies a slipstreamed one

Thank you very much. I followed the instructions you pointed me to and
everything is working fine. I'm amazed that Microsoft Tech Support would not
have suggested the slipstream procedure. They spent the better part of three
hours on the phone troubleshooting the problem with me. Thank you for both
the advice and the learning opportunity.

Go Michael and glad to hear that the OP is all set.

Back to the OP, out of curiosity does line 351 (right hand side)
apply in your case:
