SP2 and Norton Ghost

Greg Maxey

I am reading some literature from Symantec that states for Ghost 9.0 to run properly on WindowXP SP2 that I should change the DEP option to "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" and modify the boot.ini file by basically changing the current /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=OPTOUT

What is the effect of making these changes on the hundreds of other programs that seem to run fine with Windows the way it is now. If I change the DEP, which of the hundreds of programs should be put in that list?

Thanks.

XP turns on DEP for all windows programs by default,as for /NOEXECUTE
You can edit that in system properties, actually xp with SP2 runs the best
when
all that is deleted, and you return it to orig. default of the last words
"fast detect"
otherwise it all slows down youre start up.

Andrew,

Thanks for your reply. Not sure I understand all and like any patient I
need further clarification and perhaps a second opinion.

From the other material I have read \NOEXECUTE was a child of SP2 and has
four options. Why would WindowsXP with SP2 run better with \NOEXECUTE
deleted all together?

I've run Ghost 9 with DEP in all 4 modes. Runs like any Norton, all 4 ways.
After install, I disable the Ghost tray (useless) app, and set the Norton
Ghost "service" to Manual startup type. You just can't do incremental backups
this way. [But your 'puter runs at normal speed.]

st.daniel,

I tried your approach and noticed that the application will start sometimes
(more times than not) before the service. I have set the service to
disabled and then start it just before I want to copy an image (which is
rarely). When I am done I set the service to disabled again.

I have just left eh NOEXECUTE and DEP settings alone since I haven't had any
problems running Ghost as it is.

Thanks.
